I worked in my country / 私は母国で働いていた

for a while, / しばらく

but I couldn’t ignore my desire / しかし，欲求を無視できなくなった

to travel again. // 再び旅に出たいという。

I set off on a ship, / 私は船で出発した

but my crew betrayed me / しかし，乗組員が私を裏切った

and left me on an island. // そして，私は島に置き去りにされた。

I was surprised / 私は驚いた

that it was a country / そこが国だということに

ruled by intelligent horses. // 知能を持った馬によって支配されている。

They had servants, / 彼らは召使いを所有していた

called Yahoos, / ヤフーと呼ばれる

who looked like humans, / 人間に似た

but their heads and chests were covered in hair, / しかし，ヤフーの頭や胸は毛で覆われていた

and their terrible smell made me sick. // そして，彼らのひどいにおいをかぐと，私は気分が悪くなった。

I did not want to be treated / 私は扱われたくはなかった

as a Yahoo, / ヤフーのように

so I learned the horse language, / なので，馬の言語を覚えて

stayed close to them, / 彼らの近くにいて

and stayed away from the Yahoos. // ヤフーには近づかないようにした。

For a while, / しばらくの間は

the horses treated me like a family member / 馬たちは私を家族の一員のように扱ってくれた

as dangerous for horses. // 馬にとって危険な存在だと。

One day, / ある日

my master returned home from a meeting / 私のあるじが会議から帰ってきた

“You are better than a Yahoo / 「おまえはヤフーより優れている

because you can learn. / 学ぶことができるから。

But you cannot live with my family / しかし私の家族とともに住むことはできない

because you are not a horse,” / おまえは馬ではないから。」

he said. // と彼は言った。

They seemed to be afraid of my ability / 彼らは，私の能力を恐れているようだった。

That’s when I strongly wished / それが，私が強く願ったときだ

I were a horse. // 自分が馬であったらと。

I returned home / 私は家に戻った

after five years in the country of horses. // 馬の国で５年間過ごした後。

My wife and children were most delighted to see me, / 妻と子どもたちは，私に会えてとても喜んだ

because they had given me up for dead. // 私はもう死んだものとあきらめていたので。

To my horror, / 恐ろしいことに

however, / しかし

they looked and smelled like Yahoos. // 彼らはヤフーのような外見とにおいを持っていた。

For a while, / しばらく

I couldn’t stand living among Yahoos. // 私は，ヤフーに囲まれて暮らすことに耐えられなかった。

However, / しかし

I am all right now, / 今では大丈夫だ。

because I bought two horses / 私は２頭の馬を買ったのだから

and spend at least four hours a day / 少なくとも１日４時間は費やしている

talking to them. // 彼らと話すことに。
