a samurai was visiting Yokohama. // １人の侍が横浜を訪れていた。

It was a special place. // そこは特別な場所だった。

It was one of the few ports in Japan / 横浜は，日本の数少ない港のうちの１つだった

open to foreign trade. // 外国との貿易に開放された。

A lot of foreigners came there. // 多くの外国人がそこにやって来ていた。

That samurai was good at speaking Dutch. // その侍は，オランダ語を話すのが得意だった。

That was the most popular foreign language / オランダ語は最も人気のある外国語だった

in Japan then. // 当時の日本では。

In Yokohama, / 横浜で

he tried to talk with foreigners. // 彼は外国人に話しかけようとした。

But he had a lot of difficulty. // しかし，彼はとても苦労した。

Nobody understood him. // だれも彼の言うことを理解してくれなかったのだ。

He wrote, / 彼はこう書いている

“In Yokohama, / 「横浜では

foreigners did not understand me at all. / 何ひとつ私の言っていることを外国人に理解してもらえなかった。

I also could not read signs. / 看板も読めなかった。

Then I realized / そのとき私は，気づいたのだ

that they were English words.” // その看板が英語だということに。」

He discovered something surprising. // 彼は驚くべきことに気づいた。

Almost all Europeans there / そこにいたほとんどすべてのヨーロッパ人が

spoke English. // 英語を話していたことに。

He thought he had to learn it, / 彼は，自分も英語を学ぶ必要があると思った

and he wanted to learn it. // そしてまた，学びたいと思った。

The samurai was Fukuzawa Yukichi. // その侍の名は，福沢諭吉といった。
