英語教師はロンドンに特別な思いがあろうかと思います。大英博物館近くで爆弾テロがありました。多くの死傷者が出ました。“more than 700 wounded.” ( Yahoo! News ) とあったり、“injuring hundreds.” ( The Japan Times ) と書かれています。戦慄を覚えます。
　ところで、injured は事故によるもの、wounded でしたら、戦争、暴動、テロ、喧嘩などでの負傷と理解していたので、何か変な感じです。LDCE の1978年版の“wound” の usage にあるように、区別すべし、と学生の頃教わりました。

“One gets wounded or receives a wound in war or fighting. The word suggests being hurt, on purpose, by a bullet or with a sharp instrument such as a sword. One gets injured or receives an injury in an accident, and this suggests broken bones”

ですから、たとえば、坂本龍馬、寺田屋事件の新聞見出しは、

となり、龍馬は襲われて、刃傷を受けたことが分かります。Injured であれば酔っ払って階段からでも落ちてケガをした、と読者は思います。事故によるケガは injured だからです。ところが1998年版の LDELC になると様子が変わります。

“You can be wounded or receive a wound from any attack in which a gun or sharp instrument such as a sword or knife is used.”
“You can be injured or receive an injury, a when any other weapon such as a heavy stick or bomb is used, b in an accident.”

　20年で同じ出版社の辞書が usage を変えています。日本語同様、英語の変化の速さに驚きます。今ではこの2語はほとんど区別しないようです（下記の資料も参照）。でも私に英語を教えてくれた、ロンドン大卒の英国人の先生は、いまだ頑として、1978年版の usage を守っていると思います。先生は日本を去りました。70歳を越したでしょうか。今もお元気です。
